An important theme in Indian myth

quote:

Perhpas the greatest theme which underlies all Indian myth is the everlasting play between the world of illusion and the world of reality: on the one hand the perpetual cycle of death, of creation and destruction and of the duality of good and bad, on the other hand the divine existence of the immortal soul and the supreme deity. This tension is replayed in the drama of reincarnation, the periodic descent of the avatars of Vishnu (more on this later) from the eternal to the temporary worlds, and the tireless search of ascetics and devotees for mukti, liberation from the world of birth and death.

Reincarnation is an extremely important part of Indian mythology.

quote:

Vedic wisdom teaches that each being in this world is an external soul inhabiting a temporary body. The individual soul called atma, is a particle of the divine nature. By its presence as the self, it gives energy to the body. Each soul has its own desires to enjoy the world, and to fulfil these desires it enters the cycle of rebirth, called samsara. When the soul leaves the body that dies, it is born into another body, like an actor changing clothes. Moving from body to body in search of happiness, it passes through all forms of life, from insect to god.

So you start out as a very young soul in the form of an insect, with each incarnation you move up the feeding chain until you become a god.

quote:

For Hindus, the whole world is sacred: mountains are Vishnu's bones, clouds are the hairs on his head, the air is his breathing, rivers are his veins, trees are the hairs of his body, the sun and moon are his two eyes and the passage of day and night is the moving of his eyelids.

quote:

Everything rests on me as pearls are strung on a thread. I am the original fragrance of the earth. I am the taste in water, I am the heat in fire and the sound in space. I am the light of the sun and moon at the life of all that lives

For this reason, Hindus are vegetarians.
